Abstract: Digital technologies are transforming journalism around the world.
Among the most critical implications of emerging technologies are their
influences on the ways journalists do their work, or the competencies of jour-nalists,
whether online or in traditional media. This paper outlines twelve foun-dational
competencies of journalists in the digital age. These competencies are
grouped into two broad areas, or types of competencies. These areas are “tools,”
or the techniques and methods of journalists, and “context,” or the broader
conceptual framework or roadmap journalists need to have to work responsibly
and effectively in today’s increasingly diverse and pressurized world. Each of
these general areas contains six journalistic competencies.
