In the current digital culture, the boundaries between users and producers of content have become blurred. Collaborative content production is believed to have a lasting impact on existing roles, structures and organisations. But are these evolutions truly about user empowerment, or do they have to be interpreted as a strategy to increase users’ loyalty to existing media structures?
We have invited two speakers, Axel Bruns and Mirko Tobias Schäfer, to address these questions. Bruns will focus on the concept of ‘produsage’, a term he coined in 2003. Schäfer will reflect on the emancipatory dimensions of these societal changes and a potential participatory culture.
